Just a little doodle

So tonight I decided to do an organic vine like illustration. I think I might try this again since I had the idea to incorporate more than one figure into the swirling forms.

Baby faces

It was an extremely long and tiring day. Tonight I just studied how Lumis constructs simplified character's heads. I thought baby faces showed the bulbous forms he uses best.

Racing snail

The never ending story has been one of my favorite movies since I was a kid. It has always inspired me to create my own worlds of imagination and to never give up hope. So tonight I drew one of the first characters that we were introduced to, the little top hatted man's Racing Snail. As an interesting side note, the man who played the snail rider is the same guy who was all of the Umpa Lumpas in Tim Burton's new Charlie and the chocolate factory.

The invisible man

This was more fun than I expected. For a change NOT drawing the person in the clothes was more interesting. I think I might try this again with more interesting clothing next time.

A drowning man

So tonight I wanted to do something different yet again. I used twisting shapes and an extreme foreshortened perspective to give it an unsettling look.

Rat Sketch

A nasty little rat tonight, much like the horrible little buggers running around in my greenhouse eating the tops off my seedlings.

Sunday, March 25, 2012

Goldfishes

I love the flowing nature of fish fins and the strength of their body and jaw. These guys I made a little cartoony. which helps me to create expressions.

Sparrows and cherry blossoms

I added some cherry blossoms to last nights drawing making it a much more interesting and pretty little picture.

Friday, March 23, 2012

Sparrows

Late night at work, just a few sparrows tonight.

Thursday, March 22, 2012

Danny Glover sketch

Danny Glover has a distinct face and it was a good challenge to draw him.

Old face study two

Another old face tonight, in a different technique.

Tuesday, March 20, 2012

Old face study

I'm embarking on the study of faces to better illustrate emotions and the backstory that can be expressed with a face. This is the study of my favorite kind of face to draw, an old one.

Female Torso

The female torso is of course very much like the male's, though the rib cage is smaller and the pelvis has a more prominent arch. Where the stomach bends is also slightly different.

Leg study

The muscles of the leg can be simplified into several overlapping teardrop shapes. By doing this and memorizing the placement, construction of realistic leg musculature can be made easier.

Saturday, March 17, 2012

Spaceship

Just a little ship tonight. I like drawing spacecraft, but its so much easier to design them in a 3d program like 3DS Max.

Friday, March 16, 2012

Larkspur

Some flowing flower shapes of the Larkspur flower. I use to be very good at drawing flowers, and it would be nice to get back into them. The intersecting forms of flowers create interesting contour lines that can be used for other applications.

Feet Studies

Just a few feet studies tonight. I really like how Burne Hogarth sees the geometric nature of the foot.

Rankin & Bass Hobbit Sketches

I have always loved Rankin & Bass's animated version of the hobbit. I watched it before I read the books, and well before Peter Jackson ever got ahold of Tolkien. The animation was choppy and simple, but the narrative quality immersed me into their world. They used very few frames of animation to tell the story, and their line work was classically artistic.

Frog Sketches

So today was long, all I wanted to do was a few little frog sketches tonight.

Sunday, March 11, 2012

Lizard Character

Tonight I am showing the reference picture I used to create this little lizard guy. My stylizing of real animals is coming along pretty well. I think I should try caricatures of people next.

Saturday, March 10, 2012

Lemmings

Just a few lemmings pulling a little one behind a big 'ol book. My characters progress much faster now days. I wish I could devote more time to my drawings every night, but for the time being I'll just have to get quicker.

The mouse and the lion

A little illustration of the classic story of the mouse and the lion. I have the mouse scratching his head deciding whether or not to set him free.

Thursday, March 8, 2012

Lightning Bug

Just a little sketch tonight. A lightning bug looking coy.

Tuesday, March 6, 2012

Dancing gesture drawings

The fluid shapes of dancers make for the most dynamic of shapes. I need to get better at simplifying these shapes and translating how they look in perspective and at multiple angles. This is the key to creating convincing emotive posing of my characters.

Monday, March 5, 2012

Bird Gestures

Just a few sketches of bird gestures tonight. The sweeping arcs of the birds wings and the flowing shapes of their muscular bodies are fun to draw.

Sunday, March 4, 2012

A mushroom gnome

I like creating little creatures. Most of my work heavily uses reference models. But I'm learning, so a certain amount of copying is necessary at this point. I am creating more drawings without a reference model lately, so my grasp of character construction is improving. Tonight I used Brian Froud and his faeries as a jumping off point.

Saturday, March 3, 2012

Merlin squirrel

I thought I'd do an experiment tonight. I wanted to change a Disney character into a flushed out 3d realistic drawing. Its not great but I think I'll try this again. It was fun to have a starting point to experiment from.

Friday, March 2, 2012

Cherry picker

Just a little sketch tonight of a pixie girl struggling with a cherry.

Thursday, March 1, 2012

Little lion rider

I tried to recreate a certain feeling tonight. I wanted to draw something inherently dangerous yet controlled. Like a little girl atop the over sized king of the jungle.
