A spooked owl

Went a little cartoony tonight. An owl afraid of the dark you say... Well this one just happens to be sitting alone on Halloween night... spooky

Scary tree

A creepy old tree reminiscent of the trees form snow white and her run through the forest.

Troll sketch

The troll from "Earnest Scarred Stupid" is one of the more horrifying creatures from my nightmares as a child. I can recall perfectly the terror those dreams had on my waking mind when alone in the woods at night. If you've ever seen this movie, it is stupid... but there were some truly classic horror story techniques employed therin.

Swamp monster

I was trying to think up some old B movie classics, and... of course the classic swamp monster.

An Irish werewolf

Tis the disembodied head of an Irish werewolf.

Spiders

Just a few sketches of spiders here. I had the idea of using fingers as legs, but that would need some development.

Crows and skull

I always liked how people make objects disintigrate into little bits or in this case crows. Needs more work, but I now see the way I can accomplish it next time. Continuing my education every day.

Wolf sketch

Not especially happy with this one. It had a rocky start, got a little better, but the time factor worked against me and it never quite made it. I was experimenting with flat shadowing and linework acentuating it.

Haunted house

I looked at a few abandoned houses, picked an angle I liked and started drawing an old run down house from several photos online. This seems to be the process that works best for me. Often I'll have a loose idea in my head of what I want to draw, so I'll look for reference photos of the real world subject. Then I'll search google images for the emotive or visual qualities I want. Often by doing this I'll stumble across something visually apealing even though the subject is completely unrelated. Thus "Original" artwork is born.

Mummy sketch

Drawing ribbons across the human form is a great way to describe the volumes. It was definately easier to define the forms when drawng the wrapped bandages on this guy.

A demon cooking

He's stewing up something delightfully nasty. These character sketches I seem to do the best. Or I just have the most practice at. The narrative is fun for me to be thinking about while drawing. I think having a narrative running in my mind will be very important to my future work.

A demon book keeper

This poor devilish dude has been putting in a lot overtime. I can relate.

Skeletons

Just a few skeleton studies tonight. Did a little stylization on a few of them.

Flaming pumpkins

OK, so these don't look so good.  "But I'm tired, I've been walkin' all day".
... "That don't confront me, long as I get a better sketch tommorrow"

A wicked witch

Tonight I drew an old, haggered, wrinkled, evil 'ol witch.

Elvira pin-up

Mistress of the dark in pin-up form. I've never drawn a pin-up girl before, but I like the style. Unfortunately I didn't get the eyes right.

Halloween night walk

Just a quick back-lit Halloween scene tonight.

Grave digger sketch

Tried another style tonight. Used a grey middletone for most of the image, then put in the black shadows and erased out the white highlights. Drawing faces is getting easier for me now days.

Vampire drawing

The highlighted eyes are a classic way to give an eerie look to a face. Not that this character needs to be any creepier.

The Grimm Reaper

I've got to say, doing all these spooky sketches is awesome. Its so easy to come up with ideas. And whats more I can get as stylized and distorted with the image as I want and not have to worry about it looking to "dark".

A black cat

What better artist to study for Halloweenish style that Tim Burton. I did my own creepy black cat using a quick cat sketch Tim drew as a pose reference.

A fat zombie

Sitting on a mountain of skulls this fat evil thing looks far too pleased with himself.

Crows in the corn

Crows are one of creepiest of birds, and definitely an icon of Halloween. I've always liked how they cock their heads to the side as if questioning. I might do some more drawings involving crows and ravens.

Frankenstein's monster

I did quite the exaggeration of an already exaggerated character.

Scarecrow

My first real concept sketch of an idea I had for a scarecrow. I'll be working on this fellow more.

31 Days of Halloween

My favorite time of year... Halloween. I get to unleash all my pent up nasty, creepy angst for a whole month upon this blog. This should be fun doing 31 Halloweeny drawings. Tonight to kick things off, the epidemy of the season the Jack-O-Lantern.
